A large family and a busy social life. Everyone needed a place of their own, and those places had to flow into one another.
The clients wanted rooms that could stand apart without shutting each other out. We narrowed the opening to the kitchen so it can close when that suits, while the connection stays.
What went between the two is a double-sided fireplace, built into the bespoke joinery. The large pane means both rooms benefit from it, and the fire does the work a door cannot.
The design
A table that follows the line of the architecture
They wanted to be able to eat with a lot of people. We placed the table so that it follows the line of the architecture; that brings the room into balance instead of leaving the furniture stranded in it.
Neutral colours with shifting textures and materials keep the whole thing calm. What stands out is not a colour or an object, but that it all sits right.
